6 Insta-Worthy Vampire Diaries Locations in Covington Georgia
This post is all about Covington Georgia.
Welcome to Mystic Falls, home of vampires, werewolves, hybrids, witches, and more! This town is the fictional home of the beloved Salvatore brothers from the CW show, The Vampire Diaries.
The show follows human, Elena Gilbert through high school after her parents tragically died in a car accident. While coping with this loss, she meets the hot new kid, Stephan Salvatore. Of course, Stephen is no ordinary teenage boy; he’s a vampire! And wherever Stephen goes, his brother Damon is sure to follow, wreaking havoc along the way.
Of course, plenty more happens throughout the nine seasons of the show, but I’ll leave you in suspense if you haven’t had the time to binge it just yet!
Covington, Georgia
Let’s get into it! Mystic Falls is not a real place. Gasp, I know! But the majority of the show was filmed in the town Covington, Georgia. Even though there are no supernatural beings roaming the town (that we know of), Covington is Mystic Falls. The show used every nook and cranny of the town during filming, so I would definitely suggest adding a little vervain to your morning coffee just to be safe.
How to See Everything in Covington Georgia Mystic Falls
Self-Guided vs Paid Tour
There are multiple ways to see all that Covington has to offer in the vampire category, and it all just depends on your budget and your love for the show. You can take this guide I’ve created with all the filming locations and addresses and follow your own walking tour through Mystic Falls. Or you can take the tour with the Vampire Stalkers.
I will say you can see everything on the paid tour with the self-guided tour below except for the Lockwood Mansion. Without the tour, you can only go to the gate at the front of the property; however, if you pay for the tour, you get to go onto the property, take your pictures on the front steps, see the backyard where most of the parties take place, and there is even a little memorabilia room. You do not get to go inside the mansion with the tour because there are people actually living there!
Another reason to take the tour is the behind-the-scenes details from the tour guides! Our tour guide has been in Covington since they started filming back in 2009 and was even an extra in some of the episodes. She had amazing stories about the cast and crew that you definitely have not heard before.
The tour company offers two tours: The Mystic Falls Tour and The Originals Tour. Each tour is $55 per person. My sister and I went on The Mystic Falls Tour.
Vampire Diaries Tour – Self Guided
“Welcome to Mystic Falls” Sign
1143 Oak St SE, Covington, GA 30014
You can find the sign in front of the Covington Welcome Center. Inside, there is even a little museum of show memorabilia that is open to the public.
We parked our car here and continued the tour on foot, but another great place to park is in the town square. Be warned though! Parking in the town square fills up VERY quickly.
The Lockwood Mansion
2129 East Street SE, Covington, Georgia
Next stop is Tyler Lockwood’s family home as well as the major party spot like Klaus’s homecoming, the masquerade party, and Miss Mystic Falls. You won’t be able to get up close to the mansion due to it being private property, but the front gate makes for a nice backdrop. If you want to get closer to the mansion and view the backyard, I suggest the Vampire Stalkers tour.
Caroline Forbes’s House
2118 Floyd St NE, Covington, GA 30014
Right down the street is the home of Caroline Forbes, one of Elena’s best friends. Just like the Lockwood Mansion, this home has residents, so they kindly ask you to not stand on their porch. This house was only used for exterior scenes; the interior scenes were filmed in studio.
Elena Gilbert’s House
2104 Floyd Street NE, Covington, GA, 30014
This was the most humorous part of the tour. Literally right across the street from Caroline’s house lies the popular home of Elena Gilbert. Although they weren’t neighbors in the show, this made filming much easier since they did not have to move very far! The residents of this home actually had a little chalk line on their sidewalk saying where to stand and to kindly not pass the line.
Damon and Elena’s Rain Kiss
3120 Conyers St SE, Covington, GA, 30014
Academy Springs Park is where Damon and Elena have their famous rain kiss. The bridge decked out in lights in the background of the scene is a good landmark to know you are in the right place. Yes, my sister and I did go back when we had a rainy day just to get pictures, and it was so much fun!
This location was also used for some scenes from Elena’s college, Whitmore College. Elena and Jeremy have a running scene here, and Elena and Caroline have a heart to heart here about Elena’s new boyfriend, Liam, after she loses her memories of Damon.
They even used this location as a graveyard! The crew piled tombstones across the park and filmed the scene of Alaric visiting Jenna’s grave.
Town Square
1116 Clark St SW, Covington, GA 30014
To end your tour, welcome to the town square! Here stands the famous bell tower! And right next to it is the fully functioning Mystic Grill. You can actually eat inside the Mystic Grill, but don’t be disappointed because the interior was not used in the show. The restaurant itself was not even made into a restaurant until 2014!
The benches in the town square are also the real benches that the cast has sat on in many scenes, so try out a photoshoot with the bell tower in the background.
Restaurants in Covington Georgia
Mystic Grill
The famed Mystic Grill is a working restaurant and bar! Located in town square, it is practically a must for your Vampire Diaries adventure. They have some themed cocktails (I got a Sinful Salvatore) and menu choices. And don’t forget to take a picture at the bar in the Alaric and Stephen chairs! They do not take reservations, so make sure you plan to get there early because the line to get in is usually pretty long.
Bread and Butter Bakery
The perfect place to load up on some caffeine for your tour around Mystic Falls! Bread and Butter has everything from vampire coffees, teas, pastries, cake, and even wine, jams, sauces, and premade sandwiches. Also, they sell blood bags here; these ones are hibiscus tea while the ones sold at the souvenir shops are energy drink infused.
Scoops
The cutest ice cream and candy shop! Scoops has been known to have famous visitors from the entire cast! Ian Somerholder’s favorite thing on the menu, we were told, is a banana pudding milkshake, so of course, we had to try it! And let me say, it does not disappoint!
Town House Café
This little café may seem familiar if you decide to visit. The show actually filmed a couple scenes here whenever Matt and friends met up to discuss the supernatural beings of the town.
More Food Options:
Your Pie Pizza
Bradley’s Real Pit Barbecue
Osake – Japanese Hibachi and Sushi
Where to Stay
The Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast
If you really want to splurge on your little trip away from home, then Twelve Oaks will not disappoint! Not only was it a filming location for the show, but its history goes as far back as being a location in Gone with the Wind! Be sure to look at the suite options as they have one specially for vampire fans. Also make sure before you book, you check the prices on both their website and Airbnb to be certain you get the best deal.
If you do not want to stay, Twelve Oaks has a tour in the works for outside guests to enjoy the interior and exterior of the beautiful estate.
Airbnb
My sister and I planned the more budget friendly stay with Airbnb. Our place was in the neighboring town, Porterdale which was less than a ten-minute drive right into the town square along one road. There are a few Airbnbs available near and around Covington, so you are sure to find the best fit for you!
Things to Do in Covington Georgia
Vampire Stalkers Mystic Falls Tours
1102 Monticello St SW, Covington, GA 30014
You can find all the Vampire Diaries, Legacies, and Originals merch in this store. From t-shirts, snow globes, jewelry, and posters, you will definitely find something worth purchasing. Here is another place to buy blood bags, but as the cashier will warn you, the blood bags sold here are energy drinks. Here, they also have a little memorabilia room in the back with costumes and props as well as the safe Stephen is trapped in when Silas throws him into the lake for the summer.
The Alley Shop
1116 Clark St SW, Covington, GA 30014
Another Vampire Diaries merch store is located down the stairs next to the entrance of Mystic Grill. This is a perfect place to check out while waiting for your table. There is a whole new variety of shirts, bourbon glasses, art prints, and your very own Miss Cuddles! In the back of the store is another memorabilia section filled with costumes and props. This is also another spot for blood bags, but you have to ask for them at check out. If you wait to go after you’ve eaten at Mystic Grill, keep your receipt and get 5% off at the shop!
Best Time to Visit Covington Georgia
In my opinion, you can see everything in Covington in a day which makes it the perfect day trip from Atlanta (only a forty-minute drive!), but don’t worry, those who want to suck as much out of the town as they can, can easily stretch it into a weekend trip like my sister and I did.
