This was easily one of the most nerve wracking days on the van build. I mean— putting holes in the most expensive thing you own?! No biggie. (My face in the video says otherwise)

On van 1.0, I did try to do some of these cuts on my own, but I quickly learned that the jigsaw is my least favorite tool of all time. I was just too panicked that I would make a mistake.

So I brought in reinforcements. Some of you may remember Tom, my stepdad, from van 1.0. He’s a carpenter/contractor by trade, so when it comes to the bigger projects where I need a helping hand, I book him for the day.

The fan installation was embarrassingly easy the second time around. It’s kind of funny to look back and see how long it had taken us the first time. But here we are with a fan installed and ready to go!

Let’s talk about plan B!

For charging my electrical system that is.

Last video I explained my solar system which will be my primary way of charging my batteries. However on days with less sun when I’m not pulling in enough power, I’ve installed a DC-DC battery charger as a backup.

The DC-DC battery charger is such a lifesaver! You just hook it up to the batteries in your system and then hook it up to the van starter battery. And you have power!

I make it seem really simple. And it was the second time around. The first time I installed this system in van 1.0, I was terrified of messing around with the van battery since I’m not that knowledgeable with car stuff.

But another lesson from YouTube University taught me all I need to know! And now I’m an expert in my electrical system😎

Honestly it’s probably my proudest moment. Because before all this vanlife stuff, electricity was terrifying to me. (Probably drilled into me at film school.) But look at me now! I know the difference between volts, amps, watts, ac, dc, and all the things!

I can’t believe I finished the electrical system

I can’t believe I finished the electrical system in less than a week! The first van’s system took me TWO MONTHS!

That’s the silver lining I’ve been holding onto as I jump head first into this second build. I’ve already done all of this. I’ve made the mistakes, problem solved, researched. I’ve done it already. So this time around the van build is speeding along.

But don’t worry! There’s been plenty of new problems arising that I’ve had to figure out. The famous quote in the vanlife world when it comes to building out your own conversion is

“everything takes longer than you think”.

And that is definitely the case! Most of the time it’s not having the right tool or bit or material and having to spend your day at the hardware store. Or the weather ruining your plans for an entire week. There’s always something. But eventually it all gets done. You see your hard work through the progress photos. And it’s all worth it!

Time to jump into electrical!!!

Wiring is a super important step because you need to go into it with a plan. At this point your vision for the layout of your van has to be pretty set in stone. Most importantly you have to really envision yourself living in here.

Where are you going to need to plug in your phone? Where are you going to need extra lighting to do work? Where do you want your switches, your fan, your fridge, your plumbing system?

The build starts to feel much more real. This process is so exciting because you really start to see the end goal in your mind.

Although an important step, I will say this is as easy as it gets in the electrical world.

first day of the van build is all about the subfloor!

Although it was a pretty painless day, this is one of the most important steps of the van build. This subfloor sets the base for everything else that goes into the van.

Again the goal of this build is to reuse as much of the original materials from van one, and for this entire project, I did just that. The plywood floor base was already measured and cut to fit the dimensions of this van (so happy I went with the same van wheel base!). And the pieces of the foam board insulation fit in pretty nicely after a few small cuts.

One thing I did differently this time was the furring strips I places down first. In van one I didn’t do this, just put the plywood base right on top of the insulation. This time around I wanted to make the floor base stronger, so I added the furring strips. So when I’m walking on this floor, it won’t start sinking over time.

Let’s catch everybody up on how I got into van life! Because this isn’t my first rodeo.

I originally got my first van back in 2022. I had moved back from LA, sold my car, moved in with my parents and started saving up for a home on wheels.

When I got the van, every single moment I wasn’t working, I was in the van. Building her out was such an insane learning experience, but I had so much fun. This build really made me realize how much I love learning new things, challenging myself, and letting go of the fear of failing.

Then of course, I failed in the worst way. I totaled the van. My pride and joy was gone. A month away from setting out on the road. Back to the drawing board.

I was terrified for the longest time that this might be a sign from the universe. Maybe I wasn’t meant to do vanlife. Maybe I should just give up and try something else.

Well obviously there was something in me that wanted to keep going. (Plus I hate losing.) So two years after my initial start into vanlife, I bought van 2.0

And now we’re at the starting line again. But with so much more knowledge and experience. This journey is about to be even more exciting than the last. I get to put my skills to the test again.

And I’m so happy to be sharing it with all of you!!

Let’s get into the nitty gritty of Van 2.0.

She’s a 2022 Ford Transit AWD High Roof!!

My last van was a medium roof, and this second chance has made me realize how much I was missing!! The medium roof interior height of a Ford Transit is at about 5’10”. The high roof interior height is 6’ 3”!!!!!!! Being a tall gal at 5’ 8”, those extra inches allow me to stand completely straight once the flooring and ceiling are all put together.

That extra height also leaves me with extra space to add storage! My bed can sit higher and give me more space in the “garage”. And I can have larger over head cabinets! The possibilities are endless!

Exactly a year ago, I crashed my first van. I had a month of work left before she would have been hitting the road. It was heartbreaking, devastating, overwhelming.

14 year old me was SCREECHING when I got to see THE fault in our stars bench. (Technically the original one was stolen after the movie came out, but they replaced it so it’s basically the same bench) My little fangirl self was out for the world to see this day, and I’m not ashamed. I will not, however, tell you how long I waited for this couple to leave, so I could get my turn sitting on it.

Oh I also saw some actual art on my museum hopping day. There’s just something about wandering through the artwork with absolutely no hurry to be anywhere else.
